Twitter Reacts to Kim Jong-Il’s Death by Trending ‘Team America’

Posted in Twitter on Monday, December 19, 2011, 09:02

Controversial leader of North Korea, Kim Jong-Il, has died after suffering what is thought to have been a heart attack, on a train journey, Saturday December 17th.

While North Korea may be mourning the death of its ruler, the comments appearing across social media sites don’t show the dictator, or the repressed nation, much sympathy.

Shortly after the news broke yesterday, Twitter became flooded with posts not regarding Kim Jong-Il the man, but rather his puppet character in the 2004 film Team America: World Police.

The movie, produced by Matt Stone and Trey Parker (South Park), depicted Jong-Il as an evil dictator bent on taking over the world. His character couldn’t pronounce the letter ‘L’ which led to a number of his ‘catchphrases’ becoming contemporary expressions; such as ‘herrow’ and his song in the movie ‘I am so ronery’. Sky News has even used clips of the film in its reporting of the event - http://news.sky.com/home/world-news/article/16133036 (2:20).

The term ‘Team America’ is now trending world wide on Twitter with thousands of users posting images and videos from the film, as well as jokes about Jong-Il’s character. Most either express a sense of amusement/pleasure that the dictator is dead, while others are (worryingly) coming to the realisation that Kim Jong-Il wasn’t just a Team America character.

Google Zeitgeist 2011: Rebecca Black, Ryan Dunn, Steve Jobs, Google+

Posted in Google on Friday, December 16, 2011, 06:30

Goole has released its annual Zeitgeist data, documenting the most popular topics in 2011 determined by the level of search.

Covering 48 different countries, Google Zeitgeist 2011, features the Top 10 searches in a number of different categories, including Overall searches, News, Popular Culture, Lifestyle, Science, Sports, Tech & Gadgets, and more.

The ‘fastest growing’ Global search query in 2011 was cheese-pop phenomenon Rebecca Black, whose searches peaked in March. The full list of fastest rising global queries shows:

  1. Rebecca Black
  2. Google+
  3. Ryan Dunn (Jackass star who died in June)
  4. Casey Anthony (The trial covering the death of 2 year old Caylee Anthony)
  5. Battlefield 3
  6. iPhone 5
  7. Adele
  8. TEPCO (Japanese electric utility company)
  9. Steve Jobs
  10. iPad2

While Google+ did well in searches this year, it looks like 2011 could be spelling the death of the social platform with 7 out of 10 of the ‘fastest falling Global queries’ being social networks. MySpace, Hi5, Meebo, and 4 other European social networks all displayed a drop in searches at some point during the year.

Fastest Growing in the US doesn’t differ too much from the Global results with Rebecca Black in the top spot. Ryan Dunn, Casey Anthony, Google+, Adele, Steve Jobs and the iPhone 5 were all in the list. Pinterest.com Osama Bin Laden and Hurricane Irene were all more US specific.

The UK’s fastest rising included the Royal wedding (number 1), iPhone 5, Ryan Dunn, Rebecca Black, Adele, Fifa 12, Groupon, Minecraft and Ed Sheeran.

Ofcom Say Online Shopping is Most Popular in the UK

Posted in Internet on Wednesday, December 14, 2011, 06:45

A recent report from UK independent regulator, Ofcom, suggests that “consumers in the UK use the internet for shopping than other major countries.”

Ofcom’s sixth International Communications Market report researches the communications behaviour of internet users in six markets: the UK, Germany, France, Italy, the US, and Australia. The study explores usage of internet, mobile communications, fixed line telephony and television, and addresses a range of behavioural issues about these communications, among internet users.

The report reveals that “8 in 10 UK internet users (79%) said they had ordered goods or services online in 2010, higher than any other European country, with just 27 per cent of consumers in Italy claiming to have done so.”

9 in 10 users (89%) claimed they had visited an online retailer in 2010 and also had the intention to do so in 2011. UK users also spent more time the sites with an average of 84 minutes in January 2011. Consumers in Poland and Italy only averaged 20 minutes of time spent on online retail stores.

It also reveals that the UK also watches more TV online, use their mobiles more to go online and play more games on their phones, and pay a lower cost for their online communications than any other country in the world. Looks like we can’t complain about broadband prices any more!

Google Release Videos and Photos API… Then Takes it Away

Posted in Google on Wednesday, November 16, 2011, 09:29

It looks like Google is in the process of updating the Google+ API to include more video and image options for developers… not that it wants you to know that.

According to Silicon Filter, shortly after the announcement was made on the Google+ Platform blog it was removed, suggesting that the API isn’t quite ready.

When it does eventually get released, developers will be able to “can get a list of public albums from a Google+ user, and list the photos and videos within each album. Combined with our existing public data and search APIs, I’m hoping to see new services such as a family-focused ‘screen saver’, a new way to crowdsource great images, or a live photo wall for a party” according to Google+ Software Engineer Yongzhu Li.

It looks like the same will apply to video access and means that we could soon be seeing Google+ pictures and videos in third party applications as well as apps if developers want to use the API for that purpose.

Google News: Google Chrome Tab Page Also Gets a Face Lift

Posted in Google on Tuesday, November 01, 2011, 12:28

Google has been rolling out updates at lightning speed recently with Blogger, Google Reader, Gmail, and Google Docs all getting the Google+ face lift in the last few weeks.

The Google.com homepage had a slight update a couple of months ago with the addition of the black navigation bar, but this time Google has tweaked the way the Tab Page Chrome displays your ‘Most Visited’ page and ‘Apps’ in a different way.

The old design displayed apps and most visits with their own drop down displays, however, the new design features each option on its own page which can be tabbed across via navigation at the bottom of the page.

The design is nothing significant and unlike the backlash Google is facing as a result of the Google Reader update, users shouldn’t have too much to complain about.

The only change which is proving to be slightly annoying is the removal of the ‘recently closed’ list that once ran underneath your most visited pages. It now sits as a drop down in the bottom right hand corner of the page which is a somewhat superfluous change given that the new design doesn’t allow for more ‘most visited’ tabs. The spacing hasn’t effectively changed.

Apart from that the new Tab page isn’t anything offensive and is just another step towards Google’s universal platform dream.

Google News: Google Analytics Gets Flow Visualisation

Posted in Google on Thursday, October 20, 2011, 08:58

A whole load of awesome announcements were made at last weekends Web 2.0 conference in San Francisco; but none more exciting than those from Google.

Not only did Google SVP of social, Vic Gundotra, announced that Google+ would finally be accepting sign-ups from Google Apps accounts; Google SVP of ads Susan Wojcicki revealed an update for Analytics that has the potential to make tracking user behaviour significantly easier.

She said that, as of this week, Google Analytics users will start seeing a ‘Visitors Flow’ option within the Visitors tab that presents behaviour data in a flow diagram. Clicking this tab will display information in what Google calls a ‘flow visualisation’ format; you can see roughly what this will look like in the image.

Analytics users will be able to select a starting variable, we’ll use the example of Source as you can see it in the image; they’ll then be able to see how users from each source have navigated around the site and at which point they drop off/exit.

The more interesting feature with the visitors flow is that you can, in essence, reverse the flow. You can select a page and see how visitors actually navigated to it. Google say “for those who want to see how visitors arrive at a page (or pages) of interest, they can select that page (or pages) and visualize “backward”. Such “reverse paths” could help site owners identify suboptimal placement of content. Similarly, “forward” paths from a page (or pages) can be visualized to understand most visited pages or to see visitor flow leakages that a site owner might be unaware of.”

The new feature will be rolled out to all Analytics users this week.
